To discover the Yali region is little bit difficult. There are mountainous and rain forest area. The people are far more primitive than the people at the coastal area of west-Papua. The Yali wear the Humi (Penis gourd), straight to front instead of straight up like the Lanny, Dani, Mek, Amungme or Kamoro tribes. Unfortunately the world is changing fast, even my visits break the stone age culture I have to go deeper into the Yali deeper region (Kona region) to see and experience….so if you want to see their world you will have to hurry. This is a wild and remote trekking expedition which will involve trekking, we have to book the flight to remote airstrips in Anggruk and jungle walking that can be strenuous and very slippery underfoot to Gilika, Lulum, Lawe and arrive in Benawa air field.

In Kona-the People are still poor life. They moved from one place to another place , after they take harvest from their garden. One day, it was on March, I visited the most remote area in Yali region called Kona village. That day people seemed nice, so we shook hands and I gave them some rolled cigarettes to them. Here they have never known about the city life. They ask me so many question about the Iron bird… They said, it is our Lord is singing above there… they said not so many times the lord appear in our area, once a month, they said. The second day, it was a lovely day, so I planned to leave the day after, but they didn’t allow me to leave. 
They said, you have to stay here for a couple days. But then in the afternoon my friend came and brought me away from that village. I was confused and did nothing. They said “Aben huwawuliesen suruk/they want to eat your flesh”… they put me the wild cave. 5 hours, I stayed in the cave! It was a cruel day for me. They almost eat my flesh with the Sago powder-as Papuan staple food, originally made of sago palm (Metroxylon Sp). Welcome and experience it!
